AASHTO Highway Safety Manual
CH2M HILL staff has been involved in the research and production of the groundbreaking AASHTO Highway Safety Manual (HSM) from its inception in 1999. The HSM presents a comprehensive background on highway safety, new methods for predicting crash frequency and severity, and approaches for roadway safety management.
We support the FHWA in providing hands-on HSM training and to date, we have conducted more than 20 HSM workshops for state DOTs across the U.S. We are also advising several states on how to integrate the HSM within their project development processes.
A Decade of Action for Road Safety
In May 2011 the United Nations launched an international initiative, A Decade of Action for Road Safety (2011-2020) to draw attention to road safety and to save lives and prevent injuries. AASHTO, together with other national stakeholders, has assumed a leadership role to respond to the UN’s call for action. CH2M HILL as lead consultant is currently developing the Framework for the National Strategy on Highway Safety as part of the National Cooperative Highway Research Project (NCHRP) Project 17-51, Input to the Development of a National Highway Safety Strategy. This national strategy will build a framework around which U.S. agencies can reduce highway deaths and serious injuries, and help AASHTO reach its goal of cutting the number of fatalities in half over the next 20 years.
