It is a bold step…to start a journey that is about achieving zero carbon and zero waste rather than continuing to debate whether or not it is possible. That is what the Abu Dhabi government did when it broke ground on Masdar City, United Arab Emirates.
CH2M HILL is the program manager for Masdar city, a sustainable city nestled in the heart of Abu Dhabi. We will assist them in developing new technologies in renewable, alternative, and sustainable energies including wind, solar thermal, solid waste, and photovoltaic.
Within Masdar’s city limits, the plan is to include water treatment plants, recreational areas and sports facilities, recycling centers, sewage treatment plant, a wind farm, and plantations of different tree species producing biofuels. This and so much more will establish Masdar City as the world’s first fully sustainable city, combining traditional planning principles with existing technologies.
The projected impacts are huge. Through mass transit, fossil fuel consumption will be eliminated; energy consumed by residents will be produced using renewable resources, and water will be preserved and the demand reduced through use of local resources. Masdar will be the showcase for sustainability as it demonstrates how a modern city can achieve a 100% renewable energy lifecycle.
